If you live in the Los Angeles area and want to see Alima Pure products in person, Green and Greener is the place to go! Owner Alegre Ramos has a wonderful selection of Alima as well as other eco-friendly brands to delight anyone who is trying to live more green!
Can you tell us a little about your background and past experience?
Before starting Green and Greener, I was the Operations and Marketing Director for a luxury “shelter” company. We manufactured high-end bedding, furniture and home accessories here in Los Angeles. While there I fell in love with the design process and decided to go back to school to study interior design. In order to have enough time to go to school, I took a job with less responsibility but within an industry that I was passionate about and was responsible for the marketing of a number of public radio programs and specialized in their environmental programming. It was during the time I studied interior design that I met my mentor, a well-regarded environmental architect, and decided that my emphasis in interior design would be to practice interior design by applying the LEED principles to all my projects (LEED is the environmental design/build standard created by the US Green Building Council).
What inspired you to open your shop?
Many interior designers have stores, but they tend to be focused on furniture and accessories. As a “green” consumer myself, I was frustrated at the lack of options…you always had to buy one thing here, one thing there, one thing on-line. I also felt that I knew more than most people about what makes a product eco/green/non-toxic and it was out of this frustration that Green and Greener was born. I apply my LEED thinking to everything about the store, from how it was designed/renovated (passive lighting, well-insulated, energy efficient everything, reused as much as possible) to how the products are sourced (non-toxic, effective and as local as possible).
What other brands do you carry?
We focus on finding THE BEST products and often end up carrying HARD-TO-FIND products that nobody else carries such as Keys, Klean Kanteen, Crafty Kids, Graze Organic and Eco-Kids to name a few.
Why did you decide to carry Alima Pure?
When I was looking for a cosmetics line, I was already primarily focused on mineral make-up because it was what I wore. When I received the samples I LOVE how creamy the minerals felt. It was the best line I looked at and it’s a West Coast company to boot so it was an easy decision for me.
They love that I carry hard-to-find items and that I can answer any question they come up with. It seems like trying to stump me is almost a game with some of my regulars.
How do you define beauty?
Beauty is the confidence to be you.
What are other little ‘don’t miss’ gems in your neighborhood?
Hugo’s, Great India Café (try their Malai Kofta), Umami Burger (BEST vegetarian burger EVER!) There is also Village Furniture (a fantastic vintage furniture store) and the first Menchi’s (serve yourself frozen yogurt) across the street from me and Yummy Cupcakes (a gourmet cupcake shop with organic and vegan options) two doors down.
Anything else you’d like to share?
Every other month we have a special make-up event. For $10 you get ½-hour with a very talented make-up artist who will show you how to make the most of all the natural options we offer! Next one is the end of April. Call us to reserve your space: 818.358.4313.
During December, we offered a special, limited edition Organic Nourishing Lipbalm with purchases over $50. Sugar Plum was a huge hit, it seemed to be a new favorite for just about everyone who was lucky enough to try one. The plum with a hint of brown and just a touch of shimmer was perfect for many complexions. We received many requests to make it a permanent part of our lipbalm line-up.
That seemed like a reasonable request, so starting today, you can now purchase Sugar Plum lipbalm year 'round. And to celebrate, we have priced it at an introductory $5 from now through January 30.
Welcome to the family, Sugar Plum!
The response to our 2 for $12 on select eyeshadow shades has been so overwhelming that we decided to extend it through the weekend. A couple of shades have sold out, so we have replaced them with two different shades.
The sale now includes Satin Matte Eyeshadows in Fawn, Chamomile, Dove, Rain, Bayou, Chestnut, Sand and Juniper. Pearlusters in the sale are Sky, Platinum, Cimarron, Viola and Toffee; and Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadows in Aria, Dream, Gold Dust, Hyacinth, Mirage, Moss, Ombra, Pyrite, Sienna and Navy. Finish your look with a Luminous Shimmer Eyeliner in Koan or Maya.
Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or Winter Solstice, we wish you a beautiful holiday, filled with joy and love.
Alima Pure will be closing at noon (PST) on Friday, December 23 and remain closed until Tuesday morning, December 27 so that our staff may spend time with their families. If you need to contact us, please send an email. We try to answer email in the order in which we receive them, so be patient, but we will get back to you!
Alima Pure is proud to be a member of 1% For The Planet, " a growing movement of 1402 companies that donate 1% of their sales to a network of 2,738 environmental organizations worldwide." Members of 1% FTP are financially committed to creating a healthier planet. One of the exciting things about 1% FTP is that we can choose exactly where our donation goes from the huge list of 2,738 organizations.
We get to choose from that list of worthy causes each year. This year we're asking for input from our customers. What environmental causes are important to you? From Air Quality/Atmosphere to Wildlife Protection, there are myriad choices, and who better to make those choices than the people who made our donation possible? We will be taking nominations for where our donation should go on Facebook through Wednesday (December 14). Then until Monday, Dec. 19, you will be able to vote for the nominated non-profits. On that Monday, we will announce where our 2011 1% donation will be going.
We love our customers, and we want to be sure our customers love their Alima Pure. To help us with that goal, we are announcing a new policy...Pure Satisfaction. Pure Satisfaction is our guarantee that you will love any full-sized product you purchase from us, or you can return it (no questions asked) within 30 days.
One of our commitments as a company is to continually improve our impact on the environment. We reached a point where the most meaningful thing we could do was to eliminate some of our samples. We have long struggled with sending all of those little plastic jars out into the world, hoping they would be responsibly recycled, but we couldn't really be sure. We understand that a few of our customers will be saddened by this, but going forward, we will not be offering samples of eyeshadows and eyeliners. We will continue to provide you free eye shadow samples with your orders and hope that this is a way to find new favorites.
We believe finding your foundation shade is important and can be difficult online - so we will still offer foundation samples, as well as blush, finishing powder, bronzer and concealer samples. But for eyeshadows and eye liners, products where matching is not really involved, rest assured that you can read our descriptions, ask our advice if you like and make your choices with confidence...because if you don't love it, you can return it. See our Pure Satisfaction Guarantee for details.
Were you surprised to find a picture of a person in our newsletter? It is something we've struggled with--putting a model on a page may alienate people who can't identify with that particular model. And the whole issue of Photoshop is problematic. If most cosmetics companies are using Photoshop to alter their advertising images, will we look bad next to them if we don't? We think smart women know that makeup doesn't make skin look flawless, Photoshop makes skin look flawless.
We started slowly, by experimenting with employees on our blog. Our real employees (and friends, sisters and daughters) volunteered to go in front of the camera to show how our makeup looks on real people. Not one reader complained that the women we featured were not gorgeous, 14-year-old models with perfect (or photoshopped perfect) skin, so we knew we were on the right track.
Welcome to the first installment of our Naturally Gorgeous campaign!
Our goal with this campaign is to showcase women. Women who have complex personalities and lives, diverse interests and concerns - and none of them need a trunk of products or a Photoshop expert to look Naturally Gorgeous. They are all gorgeous without a bit of makeup on their skin because of who they are and what they do, but we had fun enhancing their natural beauty with Alima Pure. We hope you enjoy meeting them!

To get Tara’s look:
We went with yellow and orange-based shades to emphasize Tara’s gorgeous blue eyes, as if they need any more emphasis! Buttercream Luminous Shimmer Shadow was applied with a #37 brush from her crease to her brows, and Leone Luminous Shimmer Shadow went from lashes to crease with the #39. Brown Sugar Luminous Shimmer Shadow went in the crease with the #36 brush. A damp #33 Angle Liner Brush dipped in Paparazzi Luminous Shimmer Eyeliner lined her upper lashes, and a bit more Leone smudged under her eyes with the #31 Fine Liner Brush.
