Do I need Finishing Powder?

Posted on July 12, 2011 by terresa | 5 Comments

We get this question a lot! People are so trained to buy foundation, concealer and finishing powder all at the same time, that it is almost a reflex to try to do the same thing when you switch to mineral foundation. But when you stop to think about it, the foundation is a powder, so what exactly is the purpose of adding another powder over the top?

The great news is that with Alima Pure products you don't "need" a finishing powder. The other great news is that our Satin Finishing Powder is a great product that can really polish your look and help your makeup last longer. While that may sound a little contradictory, it really isn't. Satin Finishing Powder is a great final step for those that want it, but it certainly not necessary. Let's look at some reasons that Satin Finishing Powder might be great for you!

1. If you have oily skin, it can help keep the oil away a little longer than the foundation alone. (Of course if you are really concerned with oiliness, you'll want to put some Balancing Primer Powder under your foundation.)

2. You like a super-smooth, almost air-brushed look to your face. The Satin Finishing Powder is very fine, so it does really give a polished look.

3. You like to touch up during the day. Adding foundation over foundation can get a little heavy, so for some people, Satin Finishing Powder is just enough to mattify and refresh your look.

4. You sometimes like to go without foundation, but still need a tiny bit of evening-up. While the Satin Finishing Powder doesn't offer any real coverage, it can just provide a sheer veil of color that makes everything look a little better.

5. You just don't feel "finished" without that final sweep of powder to "set" everything.  You might think this is purely psychological since powders don't need "setting", but this sweep of finishing powder really does help blend the edges of blush or bronzer, and refine your entire look.

Our Satin Finishing Powder comes in six shades, each of which is a slightly-warm-leaning neutral.  Click here to find which foundation shades work best for Yuki, Keiko, Hanae, Ami, Sayomi and Takara.  In the case of foundation shades listed for more than one powder shade, either shade should work it is just a matter of your preference for a lighter or darker finishing powder, so sampling both would be an excellent idea!

Alima Pure Staff Favorites

Sara is more than just one of the longest-term Alima Pure employees, you could really call her the Alima Pure muse! Back when Sara was approaching the age when her mom had promised she could begin wearing makeup, mom began to have some concerns about what Sara would be putting on her young, beautiful skin. That's what prompted Kate O'Brien to create Alima Pure!

When we needed a photo for a blog post we did on Alicia Silverstone's blog, The Kind Life, we recruited Sara to model for us. We asked her to pick out her five favorite products to take for the photo shoot, and the results can be seen above. Sara is wearing Satin Matte Foundation in Warm 1, Satin Matte Blush in Pink, Pearluster Eyeshadow in Silk, Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow in Tigereye and our Organic Nourishing Lipbalm in Rhubarb. The result is soft, gorgeous and so easy to apply!

Introducing Neutral 3.5

Posted on June 30, 2011 by terresa | 4 Comments

The customers spoke, and we listened! It has become clear to us, over the years, that the shade difference between our Satin Matte Foundation in Neutral 2 and Neutral 3 is rather small, while the difference between Neutral 3 and Neutral 4 is definitely larger. If we were talking about a shade other than Neutral 3, it wouldn't be too difficult for us to just reformulate Neutral 3 to be a little bit darker, but considering that it is one of our very best-selling shades, that seemed a bit unfair to our loyal customers. So we've decided to split the difference! We created a new shade, now known as Neutral 3.5, that is half-way between Neutral 3 and Neutral 4. If you have purchased Alima Pure from one of our retailers who carries our products with Spa names, this new shade is the same as Wheat. If you have been a Custom Blend customer, ordering 50% Neutral 3 and 50% Neutral 4, you will now be able to order the same shade, named Neutral 3.5.

Alima Pure Staff Favorites

Mariama has worked at Alima Pure for three years.  During the school year, she splits her time between Alima Pure and a teaching job, teaching handwork to elementary students. When she is off teaching, we miss her infectious laugh and dazzling smile, but we know the students are benefiting from our loss!

Mariama wears Satin Matte Foundation in Warm 6, so we applied that over her entire face. Then we highlighted her cheeks with Satin Matte Blush in Melon, which Mariama loves because it looks so natural.

We used Mariama's favorite shadows, Luminous Shimmer in Leone from her crease to her brow, and Satin Matte in Bayou on her lid. Then we dusted a bit of Luminous Shimmer in Brown Sugar over the whole thing. We finished with Luminous Shimmer Eye Liner in Maya in the crease and used damp as a liner. A touch of Satin Matte Eye Liner in Espresso filled in her brows.

The finishing touch was our Organic Nourishing Lip Balm in Cranberry. This super easy look has enough sparkle to fit Mariama's personality, but is quick and easy enough to apply before rushing off for a day of teaching little people!

It's amazing what a little Pistachio can do!

Posted on June 17, 2011 by terresa | 3 Comments

Several years ago, when Alima Pure created our Color Balancing Powders, I have to confess, I was worried. As someone who has an excess of redness in the cheek area, I had tried green "correcting" products many times in the past. The problem with each and every one I tried was that instead of ending up looking red, I ended up looking green...not a real improvement, in my opinion! Kate was still formulating all of the colors at that time, and she took my fears to heart. She ended up with our Pistachio, which is green, but not glaringly so. Softened by beige, this little gem tones down redness without leaving a hint of green to show through your foundation. Most people who use Pistachio find that they need to use considerably less foundation than they otherwise would.

To illustrate how amazing it can be, we photographed Alyssa, the beautiful sister of our amazing photographer, Kara. Alyssa swears by Pistachio, and graciously allowed us to photograph her with a bare face.  On the left, Alyssa with nothing on her face. On the right, Alyssa with ONLY Pistachio. Amazing, isn't it?

Because she was such a great sport, we finished Alyssa's look, applying her foundation in Neutral 2, Luminous Shimmer Blush in Freja, Pearluster shadows in Cassis and Amethyst, and Organic Nourishing Lip Balm in Rhubarb. Radiant!

The course of true love never did run smooth...

Posted on June 15, 2011 by terresa | 2 Comments

Alima Pure’s Midsummer Night’s Dream collection is inspired by one of Shakespeare’s most accessible and best-loved comedies. Featuring love potions, mischievous fairies and star-crossed lovers, the play is filled with beautiful Elizabethan-era imagery. With these four colors, you can create a look worthy of the Queen of Fairies or an eloping noble’s daughter.

  • Helena is a romantic, medium pink with a pearly finish.
  • Hermia is a bright, shimmering lilac.
  • Titania is a lush, pearly gold.
  • Oberon is a regal bronze shimmer.

Queen of the Fairies look

Apply Titania from lashes to brow. Add Oberon in the crease and outer corner, and apply with a damp brush to upper lash line.

Sweep a bit of Luminous Shimmer Blush in Sahara on cheekbones. Slick Fig Nourishing Lip Balm on lips.

Lovelorn look

Apply Helena from lashes to brows and Hermia in the crease and outer corner. Line the upper lashes with Oberon and the lower lashes with Titania.

Apply Satin Matte Blush in Pink to the apples of the cheeks, and finish with Rhubarb Nourishing Lip Balm.

The Midsummer Night’s Dream collection is available for a limited time for $30, with $2 from each purchase going to the Global Fund for Women.

(The headline, "The course of true love never did run smooth" is a quote from A Midsummer Night's Dream, spoken by the character Lysander to his love, Hermia. If you have never read the play, we highly recommend you read it on a balmy summer evening!)
