How to Pamper and Protect Travel Weary Skin

On a recent trip to beautiful Toronto, Canada, my husband and I battled everything from a rental car breakdown in the middle of a lightning storm to trying to find an open restaurant on Easter Sunday.  And then, there was the little matter of my red, dry, irritated skin. I wish I had remembered the havoc that air travel can wield on our skin. With an ounce of prevention, all of my problems could have been averted.

We all know the scene: lots of sitting around in the plane’s desert-dry, re-circulated air, reading bad magazines, watching so-so flicks; lots of restless naps, carried forth within the echo of unhappy infant screams and dry-air aggravated coughs and sneezes. Had I thought less about the persnickety task of organizing my carry-on toiletries and more about the logistics of sitting in this skin-adverse environment for 6 plus hours, my skin might have not suffered a set-back. The Beauty of Coconut Oil

Loosely following our praise of white tea, I was inspired to share another favorite, all-round beauty and health remedy: coconut oil. Ever since I’ve learned of it’s myriad of uses, I’ve kept it on hand in both our bathroom and kitchen. Once you’ve learned more about the ways it can be used, you may be tempted to purchase a jar or two, as well.

This delicious oil, which contains lauric acid, a healthy fat, is used around the world as a part of many native diets and as a uniquely potent and diverse medicinal aid.  Like white tea, coconut oil shows evidence of supporting heart health, lowering cholesterol, increasing metabolism, and raising immune function. It’s also said to support healthy pregnancy (as with other health conditions, please discuss with your doctor first). Read the rest of this entry »

Skincare advice for a northern client

Dear Alima Pure Makeup Artist,

I live in a VERY cold climate, my cheeks are often very rosy…too rosy in fact. I am starting to feel like I am looking like one of the wee men that work for my husband. Any advice? Would pistachio work? Or do I need something stronger? I have my eye on Trinidad… Thank you for your help on this matter, this time of year is tough on a girl’s social life.

All the best,

Mrs. Santa Read the rest of this entry »

Anti-aging Skincare: It’s Never too Late (or too early) to Start!

At Alima, we like to celebrate women’s inner beauty. Inner beauty has become a ubiquitous and, arguably, an almost meaningless term…and yet, within it lies the hallmark of what matters most: being the best, most humane, most loving human beings we can be; having the generosity of spirit to share that beauty with others; possessing the courage and self-respect to allow our light to be seen…

And then, there’s that little matter about our skin. We’d like it to look as nice and fresh as possible, for as long as possible, if you please…

How best to accomplish this? Whether you are 20 or 70, there are plenty of ways to optimize our skincare and minimize or even prevent many of the most common signs of aging. Here are a few of  them. Read the rest of this entry »

Beautiful White Tea

tea time 02

Wouldn’t it be lovely if there were an inexpensive, delicious beverage that could benefit  your skin, fight fat and cancer, and get you going in the morning? As luck would have it there is – white tea.

White Tea: Cure for All?

Many of us are familiar with the health benefits of green tea. But did you know that white tea is even more powerful than green tea? It also contains significantly less caffeine. No wonder everyone from Oprah to Dr. Oz to Alima’s own Kate have been spreading good cheer about this healing and salubrious natural treat.

White tea was a favorite drink of the Asian nobility for centuries.  Known for it’s delicate fragrance and taste, it stems from the Camilla Sinensis tea bush. White tea’s immature leaves are plucked before ripened, and then–rather than being air-dried–freshly steamed for drinking. Read the rest of this entry »

Oil as moisturizer

Many of us have been frightened away from using facial oil, but in fact it can be marvelously nourishing and protective. In the summertime my skin seems to be fine without it, but as the weather changes I find it’s the perfect natural moisturizer. Read the rest of this entry »

Rosacea and Natural Skincare

The Blushing Season

Less than a month of summer exists in Oregon, and as Fall nears, I find myself contemplating the pleasures of cooler weather.  I’m one of those rare birds that luxuriate in rain, wind and snow; I look forward to bundling up in a heavy coat and fuzzy gloves to make a quick trip to the grocery store. The only problem is, with the cold weather comes indoor heating; something that my Rosacea skin detests. Indoor heating can cause my skin to flush bright, stinging red, for many hours. Kate goes under the needle

Make that needles. 57, actually, not including the few in my hands and feet. It’s all part of an experiment to see whether acupuncture ‘facelifts’ work – on me, at least. There will be pictures, though not quite yet. I’ll post the ‘before’ pic when we have an ‘after’ for comparison.

The project began when my lovely friend Katy Nielsen of Waterlily Facial Salon mentioned that she and an associate were teaming up to offer acupuncture facelifts (10 acupuncture sessions and 2 natural facials over the course of 5 weeks), and they were looking for ‘guinea pigs’ to help get the project rolling. How could I resist? So, within a couple of weeks I got a call that we were ready to roll, and Katy came by my office with a lovely bag of ‘homework’ – Eminence skincare products. There is a lovely rose cleanser along with toner, serum, moisturizer, and a grapefruit masque specially chosen for my skin type. My assignment – use these products throughout the course of treatment, to support the effects of the acupuncture. So far, so awesome. Read the rest of this entry »
