Posted on August 07, 2012 by Terresa Clark | 0 Comments

This month's Naturally Gorgeous, Adriana is one of those girls that appears to be lit from within. She glows with health and natural beauty.  Small wonder, when she spends most of her free time outdoors.  Called “Adri” for short, Adriana is the opposite of high maintenance in all areas save one – her hair.  Adriana, like all of our Naturally Gorgeous models, is unretouched and photoshop free!

Alima Pure Store Profile: The Hive

Posted on May 14, 2012 by terresa | 1 Comment

hive interior

Sisters Jen Cortez and Becca Bighley opened The Hive in 2011 on NE Lowry Avenue in Minneapolis.  They had a vision of "the open-air vibe of old-school beauty parlors; a cheery interior, a variety of magazines for inspiration, hot coffee and teas, outgoing individuals, and amazing hair care products."  In February of this year, they brought in Alima Pure to complete their product line-up.

AP:  Can you tell us a little about your background and past experience?

Hive:  I've (Jen) been a hairdresser for over ten years, and my sister Becca has been a hairdresser for over 5; we opened The Hive Salon last March where we focus on providing local, natural, and organic approaches to haircare and grooming. We're one of the only dedicated Ammonia-Free salons in the area, and we eschew potentially toxic products and services, like 'Brazilian Blowout'.

AP:  What inspired you to open your shop?

Hive:  I hit a point about 5 years ago in my career where I felt drained, sick, and tired. I would get headaches, nausea, burning eyes and more after only a few hours at work, and I would go home feeling like crap. Years of exposure were finally taking their toll on me. I was already buying organic food whenever possible, using non-toxic cleaning products at home, and had already begun switching to natural health and body care products on myself, so it seemed only right to break away and establish a salon where I could find, and provide the safest alternatives to conventional hair treatments.

AP:  What other brands do you carry?

Hive:  We carry haircare from Maxgreen Alchemy, Hairfix, John Masters Organics, Intelligent Nutrients, and Simply Organic- Intelligent Nutrients and Simply Organic are both Minnesota companies as well. We also carry non-toxic bug spray and environment aromas from Intelligent Nutrients, body care from John Masters Organics, and ammonia-free permanent hair color from Simply Organic.

AP:  Why did you decide to carry Alima Pure?

hive alima displayHive:  Our goal is to become a 'one stop eco-beauty shop', so it was only natural to seek out a mineral makeup line. We chose Alima Pure because of their pure mineral bases; they're so versatile! We love being able to wet the shadows and liners, or mix the pigments with beauty balms and serums, and the clients love that they don't aggravate skin sensitivities.

AP:  What do people love about your shop?

Hive:  I think clients really love the open-air atmosphere in the salon- there aren't any walls or partitions in the salon so it feels really bright and airy . Clients also love our forthcoming attitude about the ingredients we do and don't use, and that we aren't trying to sell hype .

AP:  How do you define beauty?

Hive:  Beauty is the ability to love yourself inside and out- no matter what!

AP:  What are other little ‘don’t miss’ gems in your neighborhood?

Hive:  I adore going to Sen Yai Sen Lek for Thai food and The Matchbox for coffee!

If you are in the area, definitely stop by The Hive and see what all the buzz is about! To find an Alima Pure store near you, please view our list of spas and boutiques that carry our products.

Meet Naturally Gorgeous Logan

Posted on April 10, 2012 by terresa | 4 Comments

APNG LoganWhen you first meet someone who is blessed with a willowy figure and long, naturally blonde hair (not to mention the fleeting but powerful possession of youth), it may be difficult to tame your internal green-eyed monster.  However, meeting our April Naturally Gorgeous model quickly turns the monster into a purring kitten.  Logan meets the world with humbleness and warmth, and after just a short time in her company, you just know…this is a young woman guided by her heart.  Her love of family and animals and her wish to be with loved ones whenever possible, combined with her stunning appearance, make Logan truly Naturally Gorgeous.

AP: What do you do for a living?

LG:  I currently work in childcare and am in the process of pursuing a career within the field of Occupational Therapy.

AP:  What do you do for fun?

LG:  I like to go on adventures that have no true destination.  When the weather is nice I like to be outdoors at all times, preferably near any body of water.  I have the most fun when I am surrounded by the people I love; when that is the case I am happy doing anything.

AP:  What should people know about you?

LG:  I am really bad at lying, so it never happens.

AP:  What do you really care about?

LG:  Animals, I think they are the most important things in the world.

AP:  Do you have any pets?

LG:  Two Golden Retrievers and a Betta Fish.

AP:  How do you define beauty?

LG:  I define beauty as anything that makes an individual stop and completely forget about everything around them while they stand in complete awe of what they are seeing, hearing, tasting, touching or smelling.

AP:  What makes you feel beautiful?

LG:  I feel most beautiful when I bring true happiness to another person, even if it is extremely subtle.

AP:  What scares you?

LG:  The thought of living in a different state from my family.

AP:  What surprises people about you?

LG:  I prefer hip hop and hate celery.

AP:  Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party?

LG:  Both sets of deceased Grandparents along with my mother and father, just so they could all have one more visit together.

AP:  If you were given an all-expense-paid vacation that you had to take next week, where in the world would you go and what would you do?

LG:  I would go to Spain and arrange for a meet-up with my closest friend of fifteen years, who is currently working for the Peace Corps in Morocco.  In Spain we would meet new people, eat lots of meals and tell each other the stories that we’ve missed from each other’s lives over the past seven months.

Get Logan’s Look:Logan APNG

We applied Logan’s Satin Matte Foundation in Olive 1 with the #25 brush to give her a perfect canvas.  Logan loves to be outdoors in the sun, but Oregon hadn’t seen the sun in a while, so we faked a tiny bit of glow with Satin Matte Bronzer in Mauna Loa applied with the #23 Kitten Brush.  To make the glow more realistic, we gave her cheeks a flush of pink with Satin Matte Blush in Raspberry on the #17 Blush Brush.

From lashes to brows, we swept Pearluster Eye Shadow in Silk on with the #37 Blending Brush.  To bring out the green in her eyes, we used the #39 Large Shadow Brush to layer some Satin Matte Eye Shadow in Lilac on her lid.  We lined Logan's upper lash line with a bit of damp Black Cherry Luminous Shimmer Eye Liner.  To finish the look, we used Organic Nourishing Lip Balm in Sweet Pea.

Alima Pure Store Profile: Green and Greener

Posted on March 16, 2012 by terresa | 3 Comments

green&greener exteriorIf you live in the Los Angeles area and want to see Alima Pure products in person, Green and Greener is the place to go! Owner Alegre Ramos has a wonderful selection of Alima as well as other eco-friendly brands to delight anyone who is trying to live more green!

Can you tell us a little about your background and past experience?

Before starting Green and Greener, I was the Operations and Marketing Director for a luxury “shelter” company. We manufactured high-end bedding, furniture and home accessories here in Los Angeles. While there I fell in love with the design process and decided to go back to school to study interior design. In order to have enough time to go to school, I took a job with less responsibility but within an industry that I was passionate about and was responsible for the marketing of a number of public radio programs and specialized in their environmental programming. It was during the time I studied interior design that I met my mentor, a well-regarded environmental architect, and decided that my emphasis in interior design would be to practice interior design by applying the LEED principles to all my projects (LEED is the environmental design/build standard created by the US Green Building Council).

What inspired you to open your shop?

Many interior designers have stores, but they tend to be focused on furniture and accessories. As a “green” consumer myself, I was frustrated at the lack of options…you always had to buy one thing here, one thing there, one thing on-line. I also felt that I knew more than most people about what makes a product eco/green/non-toxic and it was out of this frustration that Green and Greener was born. I apply my LEED thinking to everything about the store, from how it was designed/renovated (passive lighting, well-insulated, energy efficient everything, reused as much as possible) to how the products are sourced (non-toxic, effective and as local as possible).

What other brands do you carry?

We focus on finding THE BEST products and often end up carrying HARD-TO-FIND products that nobody else carries such as Keys, Klean Kanteen, Crafty Kids, Graze Organic and Eco-Kids to name a few.

Why did you decide to carry Alima Pure?

When I was looking for a cosmetics line, I was already primarily focused on mineral make-up because it was what I wore. When I received the samples I LOVE how creamy the minerals felt. It was the best line I looked at and it’s a West Coast company to boot so it was an easy decision for me.

green & greener interiorWhat do people love about your shop?

They love that I carry hard-to-find items and that I can answer any question they come up with. It seems like trying to stump me is almost a game with some of my regulars.

How do you define beauty?

Beauty is the confidence to be you.

What are other little ‘don’t miss’ gems in your neighborhood?

Hugo’s, Great India Café (try their Malai Kofta), Umami Burger (BEST vegetarian burger EVER!) There is also Village Furniture (a fantastic vintage furniture store) and the first Menchi’s (serve yourself frozen yogurt) across the street from me and Yummy Cupcakes (a gourmet cupcake shop with organic and vegan options) two doors down.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Every other month we have a special make-up event. For $10 you get ½-hour with a very talented make-up artist who will show you how to make the most of all the natural options we offer! Next one is the end of April. Call us to reserve your space: 818.358.4313.

AP: If you were given an all-expense-paid, weeklong vacation that you had to take next week, where in the world would you go and what would you do?
RE: Florence and Lucca, Italy. I go every chance I get, to walk the cobblestone streets, hear the church bells, go to the Mercato to get dinner, and breathe in the simplicity and music of life.

Regina’s Look

We applied Satin Matte Foundation in Beige 5 with our #25 Foundation Brush, and added a tiny bit under her eyes with the #3 Concealer Brush. We highlighted Regina’s cheeks with Satin Matte Blush in Antique Rose on our #17 Blush Brush.

We swept Luminous Shimmer Eye Shadow in Chai over Regina’s entire eye area with the #37 Eye Blending Brush. From the lashes to the crease, we used Pearluster Eye Shadow in Grace to bring out her eye color. We lined her upper lash line with Satin Matte Eye Liner in Onyx on a damp #33 Angle Liner Brush, and used a bit of Onyx to fill in the brows. We finished the entire look with Organic Nourishing Lip Balm in Cranberry.

Meet Naturally Gorgeous model Nicolle Camarata

Posted on February 07, 2012 by terresa | 0 Comments

Meet Alima Pure Naturally Gorgeous Model NicolleIf you live in Portland and listen to 97.1 Charlie FM in the mornings, you probably already feel like you know our latest Naturally Gorgeous Model Nicolle Camarata, as she is the host of "Mornings with Nicolle Camarata from 6-9am." That’s one of the beautiful things about Nicolle… her bubbly personality (which we think comes across on the radio and in a photo almost as well as it does in person) makes everyone feel like a BFF.

AP: What is your favorite part of your job?

NC: Making new friends! People come up to me all the time and say how something I did made them laugh, or gave them good advice, and you feel like you just made a new friend. Mornings have always been my favorite day-part because you have a chance to cheer people on at the start of their day.

AP: We also know you have another job, and that it is related to something you care very much about. Would you like to explain that?

NC: I am the director of Nicolle Shops Portland, a popular shopping website that promotes Portland and encourages people to buy locally. I really care about this city—its economic growth, its advancements in green technology, its national appeal for tourism, and all of the people and places that make it so special. I started Nicolle Shops Portland ten years ago to promote the Rose City and it is still exciting to cover my first true love, Portland, Oregon. I have been all over the world and I can honestly say that this is heaven on earth to me.

AP: Do you have children or pets?

NC: Oh yes! We have a busy household full of fun and laughter. I got married last summer and now in addition to my daughter Kaden, I have my husband Cory and his two kids, Justice and Lanie; two energetic dogs, Mojo and Rosie (named after the Rose City); and Lola and Billy Idol, our two cats. Our house is a constant whirlwind of activity!

AP: What do you do for fun?

NC: Playing by the water is my idea of fun. It is so soothing and I’m not even picky--rivers, lakes or beaches; boating, sun-bathing or swimming...if it's in the sun, I’m having fun. We moved over the holidays and are now two miles from the shore line and I am really excited about this summer!

AP: What inspires you?

NC: I’m inspired by possibility, the ever-evolving nature and limitlessness of our potential.

AP: What scares you?

NC: That something will happen to our precious children. Their safety and well-being is our top priority but as any parent knows, only in our control to a degree. Being a protective parent of kids who are getting older is always scary!

AP: How do you define beauty?

NC: Beauty comes from the inside and makes you shine on the outside. It’s a glimpse of someone’s genuine and loving spirit combined with their strong sense of self and purpose that makes them beautiful.

AP: What’s always in your handbag?

NC: My camera! I use it daily to remember and record what is important to me. Just yesterday I took pictures of my children all eating ice cream out of the carton, the dogs snuggling in front of the fire, and several store fronts and shop owners on NW 23rd for work.

AP: What surprises people about you?

NC: I’m not sure. Most of my life has been an open book since I grew up here and I’ve been doing radio and television for so long. People usually feel like they know me way before we’ve even met. But, I think it surprises some people that I like to sew, scrapbook, garden and bake. I am going to be really good at being a little old lady!

AP:  What book have you read lately that you really enjoyed?

NC:  I got The Official Dictionary of Sarcasm for Christmas, and have really enjoyed reading it.  It is written by James Napoli, the executive vice president of the National Sarcasm Society) and he has a ridiculously unapologetic sense of humor that is hysterical.

AP: Who would you invite to your fantasy dinner party? (Living or deceased, from different eras—no rules!)

NC: I would invite my dad, Babe Camarata. He passed away suddenly when my mom was pregnant with me and naturally I would like to meet him. It broke my mom’s heart and she never remarried. She was going to name me after him, but she jokes that I was too ugly of a newborn to be named Babe! But I kept my maiden name to honor his memory and I inherited his eyebrows.

AP: Is there anything else you want people to know about you?

NC: Don’t let the small stature and big smile fool you. I am older and smarter than I look!

To get Nicolle’s naturally gorgeous look:

One of Nicolle’s favorite Alima Pure products is our Pistachio Color Balancing Powder. We applied some Pistachio with a #15 brush to her cheeks and nose area to tone down a little redness. Then we applied her Warm 2 Satin Matte Foundation with a #25 Foundation Brush and added a bit of Mimosa Satin Matte Blush to the apples of her cheeks with a #17 brush. Because Nicolle was wearing a turtleneck for some of the shoot, we contoured along her jaw-line with a bit of Mauna Loa Bronzer and the #17 brush.

On her eyes, we applied Luminous Shimmer Eyeshadow in Venus with a slightly damp #37 brush from her lashes to her brows. Her crease was contoured with Satin Matte Eyeshadow in Raven on a #36 Crease brush. We swirled a little more Raven at the outer corner of the eye for a little added drama. Luminous Shimmer Eyeliner in Paparazzi was applied along the upper lash line with a damp #33 brush. To finish the look, we slipped on a bit of Organic Nourishing Lipbalm in Sugar Plum!

Behind the scenes with Alima Pure & Joni Kabana

Posted on February 02, 2012 by terresa | 0 Comments

If you frequent our Alima Pure facebook page, you probably noticed that we added some "behind-the-scenes" photos last week. These were taken at a photo shoot we did at the studio of the amazing Joni Kabana, a renowned photographer who lives here in Portland (when she isn't off to Ethiopia or a rodeo). If you mouse over the images in the portfolios at jonikabana.com, you can identify some of our past, present and future Alima Pure Naturally Gorgeous models.

Shoots at Joni's studio are always a fantastic experience.  Joni's spirit puts even the most camera-shy at ease, and she is able to bring out the sparkle in each subject. We want our Naturally Gorgeous models to look like the real women that they are, and to still capture what it is that makes them "naturally gorgeous." Joni does that with expertise that  almost makes it look easy, instead of the complicated and personal process that it is. Since we have vowed that we will not retouch our models, what you see when you look at the photos is a combination of their natural beauty, Alima Pure cosmetics and Joni's artistry.

The shoot we did last week was definitely one of our most successful. We squeezed in six women, each of them the very definition of Naturally Gorgeous.  They represent quite a range of ages and interests.  With the music pumping, we created and applied a makeup look for each model, then sent her off for her time in front of Joni's lens.  We'll be unveiling the final images over the next several months, but here are a few sneak peeks, taken on a mobile phone (so please excuse the quality).
