How to use Mineral Foundation

Alima Pure’s Satin Matte Mineral Foundation is really easy to apply and very forgiving.

Below are some great tips to help you choose the right shade and apply your mineral foundation properly. It’s not rocket science, and before you know it, you’ll be a pro.

1. Begin with well-moisturized skin. Use a natural moisturizer appropriate for your skin type, and allow time for it to be well-absorbed. If you prefer a cream or liquid foundation, you may mix a bit of your minerals with your moisturizer. Those with oily skin sometimes find that minerals mixed with aloe gel or a dab of glycerin mixed with a little water provide a lovely oil-free finish.

2. Apply with a good soft brush or flocked sponge. Alima’s #25 Foundation Brush is perfect for such applications. Sprinkle a tiny bit of mineral foundation into a small bowl or the lid of your foundation jar, and swirl your brush in the powder. Tap the handle gently a few times to remove the excess. You should see only a bit of powder on the brush.

3. Now, sweep the brush over your face. It’s not necessary to work the minerals into your skin - in fact, it’s better if you don’t. Very light buffing works well. You will be surprised by the coverage you get. Start with less than you think you will need - it is better to use several light applications than a single heavy one.

Try these tips for perfect Mineral Foundation application:

  • Searching for a perfect match? Apply a line of foundation powder near your jawline. Notice how it looks initally, then wait a bit while the powder ‘melds’ with your skin. Check again after 20 minutes or so. When you find the right color, your mineral makeup will impart a luminous finish that looks very natural and blends well with your skin tone.
  • If your skin becomes oily throughout the day, try our Balancing Primer Powder under your foundation to help absorb the oil. It’s important that your skin care products are not over-drying, as that can send the skin a message to produce more oil. Gentle skin care is best for all skin types.
  • If you find your skin becoming a bit dry during the day, you may need a richer moisturizer. Some prefer to apply moisturizer while their skin is still damp and well-hydrated, to seal in the extra moisture. You can create your own tinted moisturizer by mixing a bit of foundation powder with your skin cream. For best results, just mix what you need for one application.
  • Some have found that a damp brush or sponge gives a perfect finish. After you have picked up the minerals with your brush or sponge, spritz it lightly with a little hydrosol or water, and then sweep the minerals over your face. Just a spritz or two is enough - you want the brush to be damp rather than wet.
  • If your foundation looks chalky, it is likely that you applied too much or need a deeper shade. Try spritzing with water to set the powder, or buff lightly with a flocked sponge to remove a little.
  • If your foundation looks a bit orange, you may need a more neutral or slightly lighter shade.
  • Conceal redness with our Color Balancing Powder in Pistachio, applied under your foundation. Just a touch will make an enormous difference.
  • For a natural look, use a minimal amount of foundation powder. Most makeup artists prefer to conceal blemishes and even out skin tone rather than hide every flaw with a heavy application of foundation.
  • Apply eye makeup (except mascara) before you apply foundation. Then, if there is any fallout, it will be easy to remedy.
  • Concealer is best applied under mineral foundation rather than on top.
